How Successful Petroleum Retailers Manage
Discover How M.R. Oyster, Inc. and Oyster Petroleum, Inc. Use Internet-based Software
to Control Retail Operations in the San Francisco Bay Area
January 2003 -- Quietly sitting on a shaded corner of Main and Broadway Streets in Redwood
City, California, is the headquarters for a powerhouse in the petroleum retail business. The
corporate offices for M.R. Oyster, Inc. and Oyster Petroleum, Inc. are located in a beautiful
and historical building, which was built originally as a local bank in 1900. This location makes a
unique setting for managing convenience stores, service stations, repair centers and car washes from
San Francisco to Sacramento.
Oyster Petroleum started in 1966 as a single site service station in Millbrae, California
and later added service stations in the San Francisco Bay area. Bob Oyster, Sr., the founder and leader
of Oyster Petroleum, developed an understanding and appreciation for the complexity of multi-site
ownership and multi-business operations in the petroleum retail industry.
Paper records and manual bookkeeping were becoming inadequate for the size and
complexity of operations at Oyster Petroleum. Bob and his management needed accurate sales information
in order to stay ahead of competition. Bob also wanted better control over repair bay operations at
conventional service stations. Recognizing the need for computerized bookkeeping services in the early
eighties, Bob selected operational and bookkeeping software from SSCS (Service Station Computer Systems)
to support and help grow his petroleum retail operations in the San Francisco Bay area.
Over the past twenty years, Oyster Petroleum and SSCS have grown successfully working
together as customer and supplier, respectfully. Today, SSCS continues to work and grow with M.R. Oyster,
Inc. and Oyster Petroleum, Inc. using new ASP (application service provider) solutions to improve and
expand their information and control needs. Success at Oyster Petroleum continues with new stores and
new ideas for petroleum retail operations.
